Fluent in Psychological Conditions & Legalese

A note from Dr. Brokvo:

As a forensic psychologist, I hold a PhD in psychology and am a legal expert. I translate ideas across both fields, mapping psychological understanding onto legal landscapes.

By leveraging the latest scientific literature and the intuitive elements of human conversation, I explain people—their motivations, their competencies, their experiences.

My role is to tease out the details of what makes someone tick using science. I’m not there to make a judgment—I’m there to lay out the facts about the person in question and how their life’s story relates to the case at hand.

While I have the approachability needed to connect on a human level, I always remain neutral in my clinical opinions and scientific findings.

Specialities with Depth & Breadth

In civilian criminal cases, my work ranges and includes competency to stand trial, Miranda Waiver, mental state at the time of the offense, risk assessment, sentencing, and more.

My civil case work specializes in the assessment of psychological damages resulting from a variety of events, including sexual assaults.

My military case work includes, but is not limited to, sexual assault, murder, possession of child sex abuse material, possession of illegal substances, and domestic violence.

I have experience evaluating people of all ages - from juveniles to adults - and they tend to open up to me because I treat them as whole people, which often leads to the essential insights my clients need to build a case. Even without in-person interviews, I can leverage psychological principles to read the facts of the case and testify about specific topics to push the case forward.

In addition to direct clinical work, I’ve spoken about these topics at academic conferences around the country. I have published book chapters and peer-reviewed articles on topics related to both psychology and the law. My recent work has included the updated manual of the Competence Assessment for Standing Trial for Defendants with Intellectual Disability (CAST*ID; in press, 2023).

I also contract with the State of New Mexico and other government agencies on policy related to psychology and the criminal justice system. In addition to my private practice, I teach at the University of New Mexico, at the Law School as adjunct faculty and in the Psychology Department as a Clinical Associate (LAT).
